A Dog Named Phoenix: The Inspiring Journey of a Disfigured Stray Who Touched Thousands
Every dog deserves a chance at love, no matter how they look. While some dogs face heartbreaking medical conditions that change their appearance, it’s their inner spirit that truly defines them. That was certainly the case for a remarkable stray named Phoenix.
In 2020, a severely disfigured dog was found wandering the streets of Collinsville, Oklahoma. The Good Samaritan who discovered him, Carisa Ducharne, was shocked by his condition. The dog was painfully thin, his ribs visible, and his face so swollen he couldn’t even close his eyes.
“He was skin and bones,” Carisa told News on 6. “There was so much swelling and inflammation in his face—it was hard to believe what we were seeing.”
Carisa took him to Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue, where the dog was lovingly named Phoenix—a fitting name for a soul who would rise from the ashes of neglect and despair.
A Face That Sparked Outrage—and Compassion
When the shelter shared Phoenix’s photos online to ask for help, the response was overwhelming. Many people thought the images were fake.
“We received a ton of criticism for posting Phoenix’s picture,” the shelter wrote. “Many thought we had photoshopped his picture.”
But Phoenix’s condition was all too real. While abuse was initially suspected, vets at Family Animal Medicine eventually leaned toward a medical explanation. Through it all, the rescue team ensured that Phoenix was comfortable, loved, and never alone.
“Phoenix is warm and comfortable. His belly is full. He’s being well cared for,” the veterinarians said. “Even though his appearance may be alarming, the scarring does not reflect his quality of life.”
A Diagnosis, a Second Chance
As Phoenix settled into shelter life, he began to thrive. He played, barked, and wagged his tail. Most importantly, he inspired thousands across the internet. People battling their own hardships—burn victims, autoimmune sufferers, and more—reached out to say how much Phoenix’s courage meant to them.
“It might not change the world,” Carisa said, “but it changed his world.”
Eventually, after consulting specialists, Phoenix was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), a rare autoimmune disease. It helped explain his symptoms and allowed for targeted treatment. Though his condition could be managed, the damage was permanent—Phoenix’s facial muscles would not return to normal, and he’d always have his signature “sharky” grin. He also needed protective clothing and sunblock to keep his skin safe.
Still, Phoenix remained full of life. He gained weight, played tug-of-war, chased balls, and lounged on his own dog couch. His joyful personality never faded.
Saying Goodbye
Phoenix received many adoption inquiries, but due to his ongoing medical needs, his rescuers were cautious. His wellbeing came first. Through it all, one person stood by him with unwavering love—Dr. Gena, who became his person, his comfort, and his family.
In June 2020, the shelter shared heartbreaking news: Phoenix had passed away.
“Last night, at around 5 p.m., we let Phe go. His exit was peaceful. He was surrounded by people who adored him… All any dog wants is to find their person, and he was one of the lucky ones who did.”
Though his time was short, Phoenix lived surrounded by love, compassion, and dignity. His story serves as a powerful reminder: it’s not what’s on the outside that counts, but the heart and spirit within.
Rest in peace, sweet Phoenix. You will never be forgotten. 🕊️❤️
