Canada’s New Prime Minister Mark Carney Sends Strong Message to Trump in Victory Speech
Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wasted no time intensifying tensions between Canada and the United States. In his early morning victory speech on April 29, Carney took direct aim at former U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing him of trying to undermine Canadian sovereignty.
“Donald Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us,” Carney declared. “As I’ve warned for months, the U.S. wants our land, our water, our resources—our country. That will never, ever happen.”
Carney’s forceful rhetoric reflects growing concern over Trump’s previous comments suggesting Canada should become the 51st state of the United States. Speaking to supporters on Truth Social ahead of Canada’s election, Trump encouraged Canadians to vote for a leader who would align closely with American interests, even floating promises of economic booms and zero tariffs if Canada were to join the U.S.
In response, Carney firmly rejected the idea, calling it a “fantasy” and a “betrayal.”
“We are past the shock of American betrayal,” Carney said. “Now is the time for Canadians to protect each other, to prioritize our own future, and to stand united.”
He also emphasized the importance of economic independence, urging Canadians to buy local products and invest in homegrown industries. “When I meet with President Trump, it will be as the leader of a sovereign nation. We have many global partners—we’re not limited to just one neighbor.”
Carney concluded by rallying the country around a shared vision of prosperity: “Together, we will win this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7. An economy that works for all Canadians.”
