Louisville Police said the crash happened around 9:50 a.m. An initial investigation showed the semi-truck lost control of their vehicle for an unknown reason and struck the rail of the bridge, causing the cab to hang over the rail with the driver inside.

Louisville Fire said they utilized a high-point rope system to perform the rescue. One LFD rescuer was lowered into the cab. The rescue operation took about 30 minutes and the driver was safely transferred to EMS. No injuries were reported.

“He was in good spirits when our firefighter was with him, got him in that harness,” LFD Chief Brian O’Neill said about the driver. “He got out he actually was waving to the first responders there so he was in good shape.”

O’Neill said there were also crews underneath the scene, just in case the cab fell over the edge and that everybody involved was ready for any scenario, because that’s what they train for.

“We don’t want to minimize the danger that’s there, but that’s what they’re here for. That’s what you hire these firefighters to do. That’s what they’re prepared for,” O’Neill said. “And when it’s time to go, they are laser focused. They realize the gravity of the situation. They know they have to work efficiently, they have to work fast, they have to work safely. But that’s what they prepare for, that’s what they practice for.”

Video sent into WAVE News shows the full rescue of the driver.
