Two lose their lives after midair collision of small planes

Two individuals lost their lives following a midair collision involving two small aircraft at an Arizona airport on Wednesday, officials reported.

A Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II came into contact at 8:28 a.m. near Marana Regional Airport, located northwest of Tucson, according to initial details from the National Transportation Safety Board.

This airport, known for frequent flight training, does not have an active air traffic control tower, as noted by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Airports without control towers are far more common than those with them, with nearly 20,000 such locations in the U.S., compared to about 500 that are towered, according to the Airport Safety Institute. Pilots at these airports communicate using a shared frequency to provide updates on their positions. Even in these settings, they must still adhere to all federal aviation regulations.

The two single-engine aircraft collided while approaching runway 12. The Cessna was able to land, while the Lancair went down and caught fire near the other runway, according to the NTSB.

Local authorities confirmed that two people lost their lives in the event. Each plane had two occupants, according to a statement from the Town of Marana.

AeroGuard, a commercial flight training school operating the Cessna, stated that its pilots were unharmed, according to The Associated Press.

Officials have closed the airport while investigations continue.

“On behalf of the Town of Marana and the Marana Regional Airport, our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident,” said Airport Superintendent Galen Beem. “We appreciate the quick response from the Marana Police Department and Northwest Fire District.”

Matt Panichas, a representative for AeroGuard, expressed condolences for those impacted by the situation.

An NTSB investigator is scheduled to arrive Thursday morning to assess the scene and inspect the aircraft. The FAA is also involved in the review.

This event is part of a series of recent aviation incidents, including a midair collision on January 29 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which resulted in a major loss of life.

Other recent cases include a medevac plane incident in Philadelphia, a crash near Nome, Alaska, a private aircraft that overran a runway in Scottsdale, Arizona, and a Delta Air Lines jet that experienced difficulties upon landing in Toronto.

Despite these incidents, preliminary data from January suggests that overall aviation accident rates remain at historically low levels for both private and commercial flights. Before the January 29 event, the last major U.S. carrier-related fatal accident occurred in 2009.

At airports without control towers, pilots depend on their instruments and visual cues for navigation and coordination. Research from Minnesota State University suggests that misunderstandings, miscommunication, and human factors contribute to occurrences such as close calls or runway incursions in these settings.

Smaller aircraft are statistically more likely to be involved in incidents, as they are subject to different regulatory standards compared to large commercial airliners. While still required to meet safety guidelines, general aviation aircraft follow separate operational rules.

The prevalence of smaller aircraft is also a factor, with more than 340,000 general aviation planes in operation worldwide, and U.S. pilots accounting for approximately 204,000 of them, according to the National Air and Space Museum.
